In Memory: Lisa Lane (April 25, 1933 - February 28, 2024)
03.24.24 Former US Women's Chess Champion (1961) Lisa Lane passed away on February 28, 2024 at the age of 90. She was the first chess player to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine and was a dynamic role model in the fight for women's rights. Two-time US Women's Chess Champion Jennifer Shahade called Lias Lane "an icon and a woman ahead of her time." We send our condolences to Lisa Lane's family and friends.

She was a contemporary of Bobby Fisher, but attitudes toward women players at that time were not encouraging. It is a shame since there is no way to know how high she could have reached with proper coaching and opportunities to play. Few young players recognize her today.
