Maine Chess Association Seeks Candidates for MECA Director Positions

The Maine Chess Association is seeking candidates for four MECA director positions. MECA directors work conscientiously for the success of MECA programs, represent the membership at large, and attend quarterly MECA board meetings. The term is one year. If you are interested, please email a brief description of your interest and qualifications, to be included in the emailed ballot to MECA members, to MECA vice president Dan DeLuca at dcdeluca@yahoo.com before Saturday, December 9th, 2023. Ray Haines Wins Inaugural Maine Senior Chess Championship

November 18, 2023

Twenty players competed in the first-ever Maine Senior Chess Championship for players aged 50 and over on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Bangor High School. Ray Haines took the top spot with a perfect four wins in four rounds. This event was the qualifier for the Annual John T. Irwin Tournament of Senior State Champions to be held on July 27-30, 2024 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Maine Scholastic Grand Prix 2023-2024 Standings After 1st Tournament

November 2, 2023

The first tournament in the Maine Scholastic Grand Prix, the Reuy Yehle Bronco Cup played at Hampden Academy in Hampden on October 14th, is in the books and the current standings have been tabulated. Thanks to Maine Chess Association Director Justin Fisette for compiling the results.

MECA Seeking Bids to Host the Scholastic State Chess Championship Tournaments

November 1, 2023

The Maine Chess Association is accepting bid applications from schools and school chess programs to host its three flagship Scholastic Championship tournaments: The Kathy Richards Maine Girls' Chess Championship, held this year on February 10, 2024; The Maine Scholastic Team Chess Championships, held this year on March 9, 2024; and The Maine Scholastic Individual Chess Championships, held this year on March 23, 2024. Any bidding school or district should submit a proposal to Kate Ervin Kaplan at kervin@chessmaine.org no later than November 30, 2023, outlining how the school can accommodate each tournament if selected to host.
