In Memory: Dr. John Raymond Phythyon, Ph.D., 79

07.19.22 With great sadness we report the passing of Dr. John Raymond Phythyon, Ph.D. at the age of 79. John was a prolific chess player on the New England circuit competing in tournaments such as the Boston Chess Congress (MA), the Bradley Open (CT), and the Portsmouth Open (NH). John's last tournament, played just four months before his death, was the National Chess Day tournament in Kennebunk, Maine. We extend our deepest condolences to John's family and friends.

I knew John (and played him a number of times) when we both lived in Wisconsin and knew his name from records at the Ohio State University Chess Club, and then encountered him again in Maine. As a fellow academic and scientist, we had a lot in common. Always enjoyed talking to him and was saddened to hear of his passing.
