In Memory: Benjamin Deschesne
01.07.20 Benjamin Deschesne, an alumnus of John Bapst and former scholastic chess player, passed away unexpectedly while away at college. Benjamin studied jazz at Rowan College in Glassboro, New Jersey, and continued to play chess actively while working on his studies. He was 19.

Thanks to Michael Dudley for contributing to this remembrance of Benjamin.
Benjamin jumped into chess with the Crusader Chess Club very late in his high school career, picking up the game in his final semester at John Bapst. It was common to find Benjamin carrying a large introductory book by IM Jeremy Silman, working on his skills every chance he got. In that time, he was able to learn quickly, playing in as many tournaments as he could, including both Scholastic Championships. In addition to his chess skills, Benjamin was an excellent student and jazz musician, playing nearly every jazz instrument. His focus was on the baritone saxophone. Benjamin won numerous awards for music, including the Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence from the US Marine Corps.
Benjamin reminds us of the spirit of chess in Maine: that of dedication, friendliness, sportsmanship, and resilience. He will be sorely missed.
Bapst Impromptu Swiss #20 will be held in Benjamin's honor on January 23, 2020 at John Bapst. All prizes will be guaranteed, and all proceeds will go to the John Bapst Music Program in his honor.
