Women's World Chess Championship Enters Final Match

11.17.18 Running concurrent with the World Chess Championship Match in London is the Women's World Chess Championship being played in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. The WWCC is a sixty-four player knockout tournament with each round consisting of two mini-matches and tiebreaks if necessary. The tournament's final match will begin on Monday, November 19th between current Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun of China and Challenger Kateryna Lagno of Russia.

There were two players at the Women's World Chess Championship representing the United States: Sabina-Francesca Foisor who lost to Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria in the first round and Irina Krush who was knocked out by Ju Wenjun in round two.

With sixty-four players entering this knockout event, six rounds are required to reduce the field to the final two.

Although all the matches to this point have consisted of two games, the final will be a four-game match with one game played on each day from Monday, November 19th through Thursday, November 22nd. If the match is tied after four games, the players will enter the tiebreak phase to be played, if necessary, on Friday, November 23rd.
