Women's World Chess Championship Goes to Tiebreaks

11.22.18 In the forth and final game of the Women's World Championship Match between Katarina Lagno and Ju Wenjun, Lagno, playing the white pieces needing only a draw to secure the title. The Challenger made two critical inaccuracies and that's all the current Women's World Champion needed to force checkmate. The Match now enters the tiebreak phase.

After the four classical games in the final round of the Women's World Championship Match being played in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, the score between the Challenger Katarina Lagno of Russia and Ju Wenjun of China is tied at 2-2. Each player scored a win (Lagno in Game 2 and Wenjun in Game 4) and two draws.

Tomorrow, the tiebreak phase of the match will commence.The players will play two games at G/25 with a 10-second increment. If the score is still tied, two games at G/10 +10 will be played. If, after the G/10 games, the Match is still tied two G/5 +10 games will be played. If, after these six tiebreaking games, the Match remains deadlocked the players will play a sudden death game. The winner of the drawing of lots chooses preferred color then the player with the black pieces receives four minutes to white's five. After move 60, the players will receive a 3-second increment. If this game ends in a draw the player of the black pieces will be declared Women's World Champion.

3. 8. 2. 1 If the scores are level after the regular games, after a new drawing of colours, two (2) tie break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes on the clock for each player with an addition of 10 seconds after each move.

3. 8. 2. 2 If the scores are level after the games in paragraph 3. 8. 2. 1, then, after a new drawing of colours, two (2) ten-minute games shall be played with the addition of 10 seconds after each move.

3. 8. 2. 3 If the scores are level after the games in paragraph 3. 8. 2. 2, then, after a new drawing of colours, two (2) five-minute games shall be played with the addition of 10 seconds after each move.

3. 8. 2. 4. If the score is still level after the games in paragraph 3.8.2.3, the players shall play one sudden death game. The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes whereupon, after the 60th move, both players shall receive an increment of 3 seconds from move 61. The winner shall be declared Women's World Champion. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces shall be declared Women's World Champion.
