Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced today that he is no longer in contention for the president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE). He threw his support behind the Russian candidate Arkaday Dvorkovich. The field is therefore narrowed to three candidates: Dvorkovich, FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos, and Nigel Short. Ilyumzhinov held the position for twenty-three years the second longest tenure of any FIDE president. The federation's first president, Alexander Rueb, was in office for two years longer.

In this photo essay, we concentrated on the six major locations to gather and play chess in Manhattan: The Chess and Checkers House in Central Park, The Chess Area at Bryant Park, Chess at Union Square Park, The Marshall Chess Club, Chess at Washington Square Park, and The Chess Forum.

We had the pleasure of venturing up to Prince Edward Island over Memorial Day weekend. While there, we took in the Charlottetown Open, visited Prince Edward Island National Park, and experienced Island life Canadian style.
