46th Continental Open
Sturbridge, Mass.
August 11-14, 2016

Maine had excellent representation at this tournament with 7 sections and 271 players. In all sections there were excellent games with lots of intergenerational and multicultural boards in the room. In the open section, Jarod Bryan competed in a tough field which included several Grand Masters and FIDE Masters (of which Jarod is one). He finished with 3.5/6, good for 11th place out of 33.

Darrell Jesse Salisbury (no photo obtained) worked through a tough U1900 section for 2.0/6 points.

In the U1700 section, 2016 Maine State Middle School Champion, Bill Hartt edged out Nathan Gates to finish 12th with 4.0/6. Gates took 13th scoring 3.5/6 in a field of 43.

In the U1500 section, Wyatt Hendrix secured a top 10 finish with 3.5/6 in a field of 37.

In the U1000 section, Benjamin Mock finished with 4.0/6, good for 5th out of 31. In fact, due to the delay in supplemental ratings, 4 of the top 8 finishers were already rated above 1000 at the commencement of the tournament!

In the Blitz tournament, Bill Hartt ended with 4.0/8, to win the U1800 prize and raise his blitz rating nearly 200 points. Wyatt Hendrix won two games in this single section blitz tournament, good for a share of the U1500 prize. Benjamin Mock left only with more blitz experience, but enjoyed seeing his buddies from the Queen City Chess Club win some prizes.

I was edged out I suppose, but 4-6 games were against the top 5 finishers, all my games were against the top 20, point wise I suppose yes I was edged out,but competition wise, it wasn't even close. Good job Bill!!!!!!
