Saco National Chess Day Tournament

10.15.15 On October 9, 1976 President Ford declared National Chess Day. Thirty-nine years later Mainers celebrated with two National Chess Day Tournaments--one in Saco and one in Brewer. We detail the Saco tournament in this report and will have the Brewer Chess Day tournament report coming soon.

Seventeen players competed in Saco for National Chess Day on October 10th. In the Open section, IM David Vigorito took first with 3.5/4, while FM Jarod Bryan, Larry Cohen from Chicago, and Will Ravn split the 2nd/3rd prize with 2.5/4. In the U1750 section, John Brady and Brian Hurst split 1st and 2nd with 3/4, while David Hoyt, Lee Doucette, and Brian Roderick split the U1450 prize with 2/4. The prize for top unrated went unclaimed. Special thanks to Nita Patel and Alex Wallach who filled in as house players so no one would have to miss a game.
