Fifty player competed in the 16th Annual MLK Tournament hosted by the Stillwater Montessori School and held on January 19th. The event was played in four sections: Open, K-12, K-8, and K-6 (non-rated). Here is the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

Four Houlton tournament stalwarts turned out for the January Houlton Open at the Art Studio in Houlton. Ray Haines won his first two games and that was enough despite a last round loss to Roger Hardison. Trailing the leader was Roger Morin and Lance Beloungie with 1.5 points and Roger Hardison with 1.0 point.

Bowdoin College will be hosting a panel discussion entitled, "The Legacy of Marcel Duchamp" on Wednesday, January 21st from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Visual Arts Center in Kresge Auditorium at the College's Brunswick campus. Considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Marcel Duchamp helped reshape the way art is practiced and understood. Come hear how a scholar, a museum director, and a conservator understand and interpret the legacy and importance of this transformative figure. If you can't make it in person, never fear, the discussion will be streamed live on the Internet.

A whopping sixty-two players came out to compete in Maine's first USCF event of the year. The John Bapst New Year's Chess Tournament in Memory of Bob Solinger was held on Sunday, January 11th at the school's campus on Broadway in Bangor. If this event is any indication, 2015 will be a great year for chess in Maine! Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables and a selected game.

Recently, the Boston Globe became the latest publication to join the unfortunate trend of chess column cancellation. The Globe announced that the column's long and historic run of over 60 years would soon be coming to a close depriving readers of Boylston Chess Club stalwarts Harold Dondis and Chris Chase's regular writings.
