Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Competes at Supernationals

04.18.13 NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Maine state team chess champions from Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School competed at the fifth Supernationals April 5-7 in Nashville, Tenn. Deer Isle-Stonington fielded teams in the Elementary and Junior High divisions. The tournament had seven rounds of chess: two matches on Friday, three on Saturday and the final two on Sunday.

Seventh-grader Orly Vaughn became the third Deer Isle-Stonington chess player in the 20 years the school has been going to the chess nationals to return home undefeated.

Vaughn joins Richard Larrabee ('94) and Bryant Ciomei ('05) as the only players to accomplish this.

Vaughn had four wins and three draws in the seven rounds. She finished as the number seven player in the K-8 under 1,000 section -- out of 184 chess players.

The Elementary Chess team from Deer Isle-Stonington finished with a total of 14.5 points and ended up in 20th place. The top 25 teams get a trophy.

Ben Penfold and Cole Stewart led the way with 4 points (wins) while Rylee Eaton had 3.5 points and Cameron Stewart and Kaylee Morey both had three wins to round out the Mariner scoring.

Ross Stewart, Myles Brown and Wyatt Eaton rounded out the Mariner K-6 team.

In the Junior High Division (K-8 under 1,000), Deer Isle-Stonington took 15th place with a score of 13 points. Orly Vaughn with 5.5 points led the Mariners, followed by Brendan Penfold with 3, Ennis Marshall with 2.5 and SooZin Cha, Avery Reyolds, and Tyson Rice all with 2.

Kinsey Bartlett rounded out the Mariner Junior High squad.

The Maine High School champions, Cape Elizabeth (Deer Isle-Stonington was second), took 18th place in the Championship Division.
