Endgame Tactics

The endgame and tactics are two of the most important areas of study for players who are below expert strength. In this week's quiz, engame concepts are combined with tactical motifs to create some deceptively difficult problems. Only five problems because their degree of difficulty is high. All white to move and gain a winning advantage or checkmate.

A book of chess endgame problems commissioned by Alfonso X ’Äúel Sabio’Äù in 1283 shows a chess game being played between a woman in arab costume on the left with henna decorated fingers and a woman in Christian costume on the right.

These problems were taken from the CD, Endgame Studies 2.0 by Convekta, Ltd.

Comments

Steve,

You are correct. Instead of the "++" after 4.Rh8 the annotation should read "++-" winning advantage to white but not checkmate. Thanks for finding this error.

It seems to me that at the end of the Problem #1 solution, black king may escape to e7. Am I missing something?
