WCC 2014 G1: Game 1 Ends in an Exciting Draw

Traditionally. the first game of a world championship match has the dubious honor of being somewhat dull and drawish as the players feel each other out. This game broke the mold. Peter Svidler's comments during the game summed it up nicely, "I'm having a lot of fun covering this. This is exactly the kind of game we were hoping for." Nevertheless, after White's 48th move, the players shook hands and agreed to a draw in a triple-repeat position.

World Chess Championship Match 2014 Preview

The World Chess Championship Match 2014 between the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, and challenger Viswanathan Anand, will be held from 7 November to 28 November 2014, under the auspices of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in Sochi, Russia. 2015 State Scholastic Chess Championship Dates Announced

Mark your calendars! The dates of the 2015 State Scholastic Chess Championship at the University of Maine in Orono are: Teams March 7th, (snow date March 14th) and Individuals March 21st. The Maine Association of Chess Coaches (MACC) had their semi-annual planning meeting on Saturday, October 18th at UMO to determine the dates of the tournament and take care of the many details involved in hosting the largest chess event in the state. The next MACC meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 10th at the Memorial Union at UMO. All chess coaches are welcomed and invited to attend.

Morin Wins National Chess Day Tourament in Brewer

Twenty players celebrated National Chess Day at the Brewer Community School on October 11th, 2014. Roger Morin won the open section with 3.5 points and Adam Gagnon blanked his opponents in the U1000 section with a perfect 4.0 points to take first. Sergio Mejia Sweeps Aurora Equinox Tournament

FIDE-rated player Sergio Mejia from Guatemala went 3-0 to win the open section of the Aurora Autumnal Equinox tournament played at the Airline Community School in Aurora on Saturday, September 27th, 2014. Twenty-five players in two sections competed in this Maine Chess Player of the Year event. In the U1200 section, John Bapst High School freshman Zack Grindal took first with 4-0 and Airline School's own Sean Neal won the top U600 prize with a 3-1 performance.
