Deer Isle-Stonington seventh grader Bethany Humphrey won the 2011 Scholastic State Championship for Girls played at the University of Maine in Orono on March 12th, 2011 with a perfect score of 3.0 points in three games. Jackie Rebman of Piscatiquis Community Middle School finished first in the U600 section. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

The 2011 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships were held Saturday, March 5th, in the Memorial Union at the University of Maine in Orono. Two hundred thirteen players supported by coaches and parents gathered to contest team honors in the K-3, K-6, Junior High, and High School sections. Also at stake were individual achievements leading to invitation to the Individual Championships to be held at the same location on March 19th. Each player competed in four games with honors decided by total team points scored for the four games or, in the case of the High School Championship section, by head-to-head match play. Forty-two players turned out for the five-section All Saints Winter Warm-Up Touranament played in Bangor on February 26, 2011. Winners were: Steve Abrahams (Open), Collin Calhoun (U1500), Ezra Briggs (K-12), Ian Youth (K-8), Nicholas Kawamura, Michael Hayden and Soozin Cha (K-6), and Rylee Eaton (K-3). This is the last USCF-rated tournament in Maine before the state scholastic team championships on March 5, 2011. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

K-8 chess players from eight communities participated in the K-8 Open Chess Day and Steve Abrahams Simultaneous Exhibition at Ellsworth Middle School on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. The event was a precursor to the upcoming state scholastic team championships (the largest chess tournament in the state) to be held at the University of Maine on Saturday, March 5, 2011. |
