Great food was only half the story at the 3rd Annual Joe Brown Memorial Chess Tournament held on January 24, 2009 at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. The other half, of course, was the great chess played by the preschool-8th grade competitors.

Celebrate Valentine's Day with a 3-round quad chess tournament at the University of Maine, Orono on February 7, 2009. All skill levels are welcome and there will be prizes for the top player in each quad. The first round will start at 9:30 a.m.

That postal service motto could just as well apply to the brave chess players who came out for tournament chess at the 10th Annual MLK Day Chess Tournament on January 19, 2009 despite a 20-inch snowfall in the Bangor area.

Warm up at the 10th Annual MLK Tournament at the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town on Monday, January 19, 2009. There will be four sections (Open, K-12, K-8 and K-6) with many prizes. Hope to see you there! Despite the weather this tournament will take place as scheduled.

Starting the new year off right, 34 players competed in the 2009 John Bapst New Year's Tournament on January 4, 2009 at John Bapst High School in Bangor. Two players well know in Maine chess circles found themselves at the top of the crosstable after the final round. Former State Champion Roger Morin and 2008 Chess Player of the Year Barry Magda both scored 3.5 points to share 1st place. George Spahn was perfect in the U1000 section with 4.0 points.
