Sunday Morning Chess in Portland

Most chess clubs meet in the evening. However, on a recent trip to Portland, we strolled into a chess club that meets on Sunday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Works Bakery and Cafe. It was delightful to sip a hot morning beverage and play a few offhand games in the well-lit, spacious surroundings.

Lucas McCain Represents Maine at Denker Tourament

The Denker Tournament of High School Champions, played during the 2009 U.S. Open in Indianapolis, Indiana from August 1, 2009 to August 4, 2009, fields High School State Champions from across the United States. Maine's representative this year, Lucas McCain of Yarmouth, turned in a strong performance scoring 3.0 points with only one loss in six games. Lucas gives us his impressions of the tournament as well as all six of his games with notes.

1st Annual East Millinocket Open Tournament Report

August 25, 2009

Thirteen players vied for prizes in the first ever East Millinocket Open on Saturday August 15, 2009. Roger Morin, the highest rated player, showed his dominance by winning all four of his rounds and taking the championship. Other winners were: Steve Abrahams (Class B), Roger Hardison (Class C), Margaret Bryan (Class D), Eli Daiute (under 1200) and David Ngo (under 800).

L'Heritage Classique Octo Championships Tournament Report

Twenty-five chess players took part in the L'Heritage Classique Octo Championships on July 25 & 26, 2009 held at the Ramada Conference Center in Lewiston. This was the first event organized in Maine by ChessDreams, an organizer and sponsor of more than forty USCF-rated and non-rated chess events in California, prior to moving to Maine.

Margaret Bryan Represents Maine at Polgar Invitational

August 12, 2009

The Maine State Scholastic Girls Champion Margaret Bryan represented Maine in the 2009 Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls held in Lubbock, Texas from July 26 - 31. Margaret scored 2.5 points to finish 41st out of a very strong field of 60 state champions and invited players.
