State Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament Volunteers Needed

Each October, a small core of volunteers steps forward to begin the task of organizing the annual state scholastic tournaments held in March of each year. The problem is that there always seem to be more tasks than volunteers. Annual pleas to the coaches ranks usually results in little additional help due to the load these teachers and coaches already have. If you would like to volunteer to continue to make these events the success they have been over the years and to continue to improve their quality, then please contact Dan at this web site, or Ron Lewis at raltiger@aol.com.

Tasks and functions include entry form preparation and mailing, Chief Coordinator, Tournament Leaders who process entry forms and check players in the day of the tournament, Tournament Directors who run the tournaments and report results, trophy procurement, reporting of results to the Bangor Daily News, processing new USCF memberships on line, assistant Tournament Directors to help set up playing areas and patrol the playing areas in case of questions, hall monitors to help keep the several hundred players’ enthusiasm in check, and several other tasks. Information on these tasks can be obtained from Ron.

If you’d like to donate some time to support scholastic chess, then contact us and/or join us for our fall (October) and/or winter (January) meetings. The fall meeting will be held October 20, 2007 at the University Memorial Union (meet at the food court area) at 1 p.m. Meetings usually run about one and a half hours. Thanks!
