2007-08  MAINE STATE SCHOLASTIC CHESS TOURNAMENTS

This year's State Scholastic Tournaments will be held at the Memorial Union at the University of Maine Orono Campus. The Individual Tournaments will be held March 29, 2008 and will begin at 9AM. Any State of Maine K-12 student is welcome to compete upon payment of the requisite entry fee. SEND COMPLETED ENTRY FORMS TO THE TOURNAMENT LEADER (BELOW). PLEASE PRE-REGISTER IF AT ALL POSSIBLE TO FACILITATE REGISTRATION, AVOID ADDITIONAL ENTRY FEE AND FACILITATE STARTING OF THE TOURNAMENT ON TIME.

TIME CONTROLS (All Sections):    GAME/60

 

ENTRY FEES: The Individual Tournament is open to any State of Maine K-12 student upon payment of the entry fee:  $35/person for Young Adult (age 24 and under); $29/person for Youth (age 15 and under), or $27/person for Scholastic (age 12 and under). Note the USCF has inserted a new membership level. This is a USCF-rated event and includes 1-year USCF membership. The USCF membership portion of the entry fee (all but $10) may be waived upon proof of current USCF membership through the date of the tournament (see registration form). The entry fee is waived if the individual qualifies based on invitation (see below) and the individual's USCF membership is current through the date of the tournament. A $5 additional fee is assessed for those not pre-registered.

 

INVITATION TO THE INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT (BASED ON TEAM EVENT RESULTS):

High School:  Invitation to the individual tournament will be extended to any Board 1 with a score of 3 or better (High School Team Championship Section). Any other player will need a score of 3.5 or better during the team events (Novice Section excluded).  Top girl scorers in each section (Novice excluded) are also invited.

Elementary or Junior High: Invitation to the individuals is extended if an individual scores 3.0 or better in the Championship sections. Top girl scorers in each section (Novice excluded) are invited.

 

FORMAT: 4-Round Swiss, Game/60, with possible accelerated pairings if made necessary by the number of entrants in each section.

 

PRIZES: 1st, 2nd and 3rd PLACE TROPHIES / SECTION. The Elementary State Champion is the winner of the K-6 Section; the High School State Champion is the winner of the Championship Section. The winner of the HS Championship is also eligible to participate in the Denker Tournament of HS Champions.

 

CANCELLATION: In the event of a snow storm go to http://ChessMaine.net for news, or if you can call the Tournament Leader, that would be a great help. Please be sure that your home phone numbers are on the registration forms in case additional information is needed.

 

FOOD: Food service will be available on site for the events. Drinks and food will NOT be allowed at the playing tables!

 

CHESS NOTATION/RECORDING: Recording of games for the Individuals is not required of the Elementary Sections, but is for the Junior High and High School divisions.

In the spirit of cooperation, please make sure all the information is complete and accurate. You can find out a player's ID number, rating and expiration date by looking at their magazine label or visiting the ratings page of the USCF website at www.uschess.org. Thanks. All pre-registration forms must be received by the Tournament Leader on the Tuesday preceding the event. Payment may be made at the site. A $5 additional fee is assessed for those not pre-registered and registering at the site.

PLEASE BRING AS MANY BOARDS, CLOCKS AND SETS AS YOU CAN!!!!

This is especially important for the individuals event as school team supplies are not usually available.
