Maine Chess Coaches' Communique from Maine Chess Association President Michael Dudley.

18 November 2018

Dear Maine Chess Coaches,

There has been a flurry of activity across the state for chess, and it's nothing compared to the snowstorm coming! I'm glad to write to you all once again and let you know what is coming up. For this memo, I'll be going in reverse order, from March all the way to the present.

The Maine Scholastic Team Championships are set to take place on March 2, 2018 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. This is an exciting new venue for Maine's signature scholastic event. The Maine Scholastic Individual Championships will be hosted at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on March 30, 2018, where qualifiers for the Denker High School Tournament of Champions and the Barber Tournament of K-8 Championships will be held. If you're receiving this memo by email, a copy of the PDF outlining sections and logistics for Team States. There are a few very important pieces of information about that event specifically I would like to go over in this memo.

MEMBERSHIPS: First, all students playing in the Maine Scholastic Championships must be current US Chess members. Memberships for the event will no longer be sold at the door. We are making this change in order to make registration much more efficient for everyone.
PRE-REGISTRATION: All players must be pre-registered by coaches before the event; registrations on the day will no longer be accepted. Soon, we will release a Google Form where all pre-registrations will be submitted. We anticipate that this will make check in and pairing the first round much more efficient.
PAYMENT: Please be prepared to pay all entry fees at the door. We will no longer be accepting payment later than round one. We will have the ability to accept card payments at the door via Square, and checks and cash are also accepted.
FOOD: Save for those who have medical accommodations and requirements, food from outside vendors is not allowed at the Cross Insurance Center. Vendors inside the Cross will provide food for sale, and good restaurant options are available within walking and driving distance.
EQUIPMENT: Please bring as many sets, boards, and clocks as you can! We are anticipating high attendance and we'll need all the equipment we can get!

We are so excited to be building up to our Scholastic Championships, so spread the word! Get your players ready and excited for a great event!

As has been mentioned in previous Communiques, the Maine Girls' Scholastic Championship is set to be held on February 2, 2019 at the Bangor Public Library in Bangor. This event is exclusively for Maine's female scholastic players. WGM Sabina Foisor will be in attendance, and will give a simultaneous exhibition the day before on February 1, 2019 at John Bapst. Also, Sabina will be holding an exclusive lecture and coaching sessions for participants only! This is a huge opportunity for our female scholastic players, as they'll have a chance to learn from a Women's US Champion while they compete for the nominations for the National Girls' Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida, and the Susan Polgar Invitational in Webster Groves, Missouri, on the campus of Webster University.

In order to make attendance at any of these scholastic events easier, we can help arrange and reserve hotel space for participants at a discounted rate. Please send an email to if you are interested in staying the night in Bangor for any scholastic event.

The event lineup for the next few months is massive, and has many big tournaments on offer! I hope we'll see you over the board there!
