WCCR8: Game 8 Ends in Sterile Draw

11.19.13 Carlsen played 1. e4 and it was Anand's turn to play the Berlin Defense. The game followed well-trodden lines with Carlsen playing his first nineteen moves in six minutes and twenty-two moves in ten minutes. No weaknesses appeared on the board and after Anand played 33...h5 a wry smile appeared on his lips and the players shook hands. Anand will have the white pieces in Game 9 scheduled for Thursday, November 21st.

Magnus Carlsen and Vishwanathan Anand wait for the arbiter to start the game clock before beginning Game 8 in their World Championship Match.

01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 Total
Vishy Anand 2775 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 0 0 1/2 1/2 3.0
Magnus Carlsen 2870 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1 1 1/2 1/2 5.0

We are now four games out and the pressure is ramping up on the World Champion to produce a decisive result. The match scoreline is now Carlsen 5.0 - Anand 3.0.

The start of the press conference was delayed about twenty minutes because of an anti-doping discussion between players and arbiters. At the conference Carlsen's comment was, " He played the Berlin, I played the most solid line, yada, yada, yada." Anand said the opening was a solid choice for white and that he will try to generate something in the next game. In response to a question about great players that may have influences him, Carlsen responded that he did not have any particular players that he idolized while growing up preferring to play his own style of attacking chess with a preference for sacrifices.

From our minute details department, Carlsen keeps his captured pieces on both sides of the board and often fingers them while he is on the move. Anand, in contrast, keeps his captured pieces in a small group on the right side of the board.

Game 9 is scheduled for Thursday, November 21 at 4:30 a.m. eastern time.
