Olivia Reale-Hatem Competes in World Championships (of Four Square)

Maine scholastic chess player Olivia Reale-Hatem from Cape Elizabeth competed in the Four Square World Championships on February 27, 2010 in Bridgton, Maine. Olivia recieved the Audience Choice Award for being the youngest woman to advance to the semi-final round. Congratulations Olivia!

Ivanov and Vigorito Share First at Freeport Open

Grandmaster Alexander Ivanov and International Master David Vigorito tied for first with 3.5 points at the Freeport Open played on April 24, 2010 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport. The four round, G/65 tournament attracted 65 players in three sections--Open, U1900 and U1300.

In Memoriam: Robert O. Jenkins

We are very saddened to report the passing of Robert Jenkins on April 16, 2010. Robert was a stalwart member of the Saco Valley Chess Club in Biddeford as well as an active tournament player. Former MECA Vice President Jon Malev said of Robert, "He was the finest of friends." He will be sorely missed. Our sincerest condolences to Robert's family and friends.

Maine Intercollegiate Chess League

Maine Maritime Academy and the University of Maine Orono played a two-round, four-board, G/35 match in Barrows Hall on the UMaine Orono campus on April 6, 2010 as part of the fledgling Maine Interscholastic Chess League. UMaine's team showed their dominance by shutting out MMA 8-0. John Bapst Fundraiser Tournament Report

Steve Abrahams won all his games to take first place at the Friday Night G/35 John Bapst Fundraiser Tournament played at the University of Maine in Orono on March 26, 2010. The tournament was organized and directed by MECA president Andy Bryan to raise money for the John Bapst Chess Team's trip to the K-12 National Championships in Columbus, Ohio scheduled for April 16-18, 2010

The Bangor Chess Club is Back!

Beginning Tuesday, April 13, 2010 the Bangor Chess Club is back! Located in Borders Books and Music at 116 Bangor Mall Boulevard in Bangor, the newly-revived club will feature casual play, game analysis, and monthly quick-rated events. The club meets Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. until 10:00 p. m. in the café. All ages and skill levels are welcome, so drop by to play some games any Tuesday.
