Ellsworth Chess Afternoon

02.17.10 On February 8, 2010, K-8 students from eight Down East area schools participated in an afternoon of chess games and fun with their peers at the newly-constructed Ellsworth Middle School. This "chess afternoon" is the second of three such events organized by Deer Isle - Stonington chess coach Dick Powell.

Students from eight schools participated in the second of three chess afternoons hosted by Ellsworth Middle School and organized by Deer Isle - Stonington chess coach Dick Powell.

Schools participating in this event included: Ellsworth, Lamoine, Orland, Deer Isle - Stonington, Bucksport, Stillwater Montessori (Old Town), Conners-Emerson (Bar Harbor) and Airline Community School (Aurora). In addition to being a great way for kids to get together and play chess, the event also fostered new friendships and provided a training ground for the upcoming state chess championships held in March at the University of Maine, Orono. Please see the ChessMaine.net Events page for more details.

Ellsworth's beautiful new elementary and middle school was the site of the action.

Nametags helped students and staff get to know each other.

The well-lit, spacious cafeteria provided an optimal playing site.
