On September 12, 2009 the Maine Chess Association held its annual meeting in Brunswick. At the meeting, longtime MECA treasurer Ray Duval was honored with a plaque recognizing his many years of service to the Maine Chess Association. Ray also received a MECA life membership. A heartfelt congratulations and thank you to Ray Duval!

Live chess, or human chess as it is sometimes called, is chess played with real people standing in for the pieces. Recently there have been two live chess matches in Maine, one in Belfast at the Belfast Cohousing & Ecovillage and one in Fort Fairfield at the Maine Potato Blossom Festival. Ten players gathered to compete in the University of Maine Presque Isle International Chess Tournament on Saturday October 17, 2009. Roger Morin topped this four-round G/60 event scoring a perfect 4.0 points. Morin was followed by Roger Hardison and Richard Fontinha with 3.0 points. |
