Joe Brown Memorial Tournament Report

01.21.07 There was plenty of action at the 1st Annual Joe Brown Memorial Tournament at Deer Isle - Stonington Elementary School on January 20, 2007. Contested in four sections, K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8, the tournament attracted thirty-six players. Here is the illustrated tournament report with crosstables.

Chess is everywhere at Deer Isle - Stonington Elementary School -- chess boards and pieces even adorn the table tops in the cafeteria.

This tournament was a non-rated scholastic event organized by the legendary Deer Isle - Stonington Chess Coach Dick Powell and current DIS coach, Mark Woida. It was directed by Andy Bryan and Dan DeLuca. Thanks to all volunteers and players for making the 1st Annual Joe Brown Memorial a great success.

In the grade 7-8 section, it was Jacob Starkey pulling off a stunning upset scoring 3 points to take first over current and former state champions Andrew Babbitt and Ian Pelletier and girls state champion Margaret Bryan all of whom scored 2.5 points.

In the grade 5-6 section, Tyler Bartlett showed his superiority over the competetive field with a 4 point shutout. Lucas Oliver took second with 3 points and Andy Turner and David McManus tied for third with 2.5.

The last game of the tournament was between two players in the grade 3-4 section. Already tournament veterans, Haley DeLuca Lowell and Anna Bryan battled it out for the top spot in their last round game. Bryan managed to win the game which tied her for first with DeLuca Lowell and Ivan Zembrusky all with 3 points.

In the largest section of the tournament, the grade K-2 section, Max DeLuca Lowell scored a perfect 4 points with wins over players who placed second (Kinsey Bartlett), third (Soozin Cha), fourth (Ethan Shepard), and fifth (Bethany Humphrey).
