Four regulars from the new Coastal Maine Scholastic Chess Club in Cape Elizabeth traveled to New York City on January 27 - 28, 2007 to compete in the 41st Annual Greater New York Scholastic Chess Championship. These four tournaments (Primary, Elementary, Junior High and High School) held over two days are among the largest events in scholastic chess in the country, attracting nearly 700 participants.

Come to the Ellsworth Middle School for some serious chess or skittles on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students from K-8 schools will be meeting for lots of great chess action. High school students and adults are welcome also. The games will not be USCF-rated and there is no entry fee. Come one and all for two hours of chess in Ellsworth on Wednesday, January 31, 2007!
The Portland Chess Club will be hosting two ongoing tournaments beginning Friday, February 2, 2007 and continuing into the spring: the Friday Winter Swiss and the celebrated Portland Chess Club Ladder Championship. The Washington County Chess Federation continues its series of monthly tournaments with the WCCF January Swiss played in Pembroke, Maine on January 20, 2007. This month, topping the Open section were Richard Look, Tarik Benabdallah and Nathaniel Simpson. The Joe Brown Memorial Chess Tournament will take place at Deer Isle - Stonington Elementary School on Saturday, January 20, 2007. The tournament will be a five round, Game in 30, non-rated scholastic event in four sections: K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8. Trophies will be awarded to the top three in each section. Registration will be from 12:00 p.m to 12:45 p.m. and the first game will begin at 1:00 p.m. Entry fee is $3.00. Hope to see you there.
As the snow fell on the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town, fifty-two players were brewing up storms of their own at the 8th Annual Martin Luther King Day Tournament on January 15, 2007. The tournament was contested in four section: Open, K-12, K-8 and an non-rated K-6 section. Here's an illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables of the event.
Forty-four players turned out over the MLK weekend for three tournaments at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. The James R. F. Quirk Memorial, the Gertrude Lowell Rated Beginners Open and the Portland Quick Chess Double Round Robin were all part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend Chess Extravaganza, Maine's first tournaments of the new year.
2006 was a record-setting year for chess in Maine. There were a total of thirty-one separate USCF-rated tournaments with sixty-eight separate sections serving 939 players. This surpassed 2004 as the previous record-holding year in which there were twenty-six tournaments with fifty-seven sections and 807 players. Get ready, get set, play chess! The 2007 Maine Scholastic Chess Championships will take place in March at the University of Maine in Orono. The first event will be the Maine Scholastic Chess Championship for Girls on March 3, 2007 followed by the Team Events on March 10, 2007 and finally the Individual Events on March 24, 2007.

Martin Luther King Jr. weekend has always been a popular one for chess and this year is no exception. With four separate events to choose from, three at Southern Maine Technical College in South Portland and one at the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town, you are sure to find one right for you. The Maine Association of Chess Coaches will have its Organizing Committee meeting at the Governor's Restaurant in Bangor on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. The Committee's primary focus will be on preparation for this year's state scholastic championship tournaments at the University of Maine in Orono this spring.
