The Maine State House

It was a great day for Chess in Maine. State Scholastic Chess Champions from Deer Isle-Stonington and Airline Community Schools were honored at the State House. Senators and Representaives met with and congratulated the teams in both House and Senate Chambers and Governor Baldacci offered his personal congratulations as well.

Senators Damon and Rosen and Representatives Pingree and McFadden ordered the following Special Sentiments for the teams. The Sentiments were recognized by the Speaker of the House John Richardson and read by Millicent M. MacFarland, Clerk.

Recognizing:

the Airline Community School Chess Team, of Aurora, on its winning the K-3 division at the State Chess Championships. The team scored 11 out of a possible 12 points. We congratulate the players and coaches of the Airline Community School on this impressive achievement;

the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School Chess team, on its winning 3 awards at the Maine State Chess Championship. The K-3 team was runner-up in its division, the K-6 team was State Champion for the 8th year in a row in its division and the K-8 team won its 3rd State Championship in its division. We congratulate the players and coaches of the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School Chess team on these impressive achievements;

the Deer Isle-Stonington High School Chess Team, which shared the 2006 Maine State High School Chess Championship. This is the 4th state title for the school. The reserve team won 3rd place. We congratulate the players and coaches of the Deer Isle-Stonington High School Chess Team on these impressive achievements.

Students were also treated to a private meeting with the Governor during which he offered his congratulations and mentioned that he enjoys playing chess with his son, Jack. To commemorate the day and on behalf of the state champion teams, the Governor was presented with a beautiful classic chess set in a display chess board box.
The chess set and board were donated by The House of Staunton.

After meeting the students the Governor asked if they had any questions. Andrew Jones of the Airline Community School asked, "Who is your favorite Baseball team?" The Governor answered with an resounding "Boston Red Sox!" and showed students a baseball that he keeps on his desk signed by former Red Sox players.
